A lovely and very rare original nineteenth century Sad Cast Iron Flat Iron with original brick. This piece is quite unique with the original oak handle and heat brick - the internal brick would be placed in a fire until hot before it is returned to the interior of the iron.
Originally made in England around c. 1880, ‘Sad’ is an Old English word for ‘solid’, and the term ‘sad iron’ is often used to distinguish the largest and heaviest of flat irons, usually 5 to 9lbs.
